Internet Writing
Style
If you are going to have a successful
internet business, you have to be able to write. The title of this
section is "Writing Correctly". It is a common misconception among
some marketers that grammar is not all that important. That what is
important is the message.
True, the message is of paramount
importance. However, if your product is littered with errors in
basic grammar, punctuation, and spelling, the power of your message
is gone. For your product to receive the kind of attention that you
need to be a success, it has to be professional.
Professional
appearance covers many things but in this section we are going to
talk about basic grammar and punctuation. Did you notice that I did
not say spelling? With all of today's software having spell-check,
there is never an excuse for a spelling error. The only time it
doesn't work is if you make a mistake and that mistake is a word.
For instance, if I type "if" but I really mean "is" the
spell-checker will not catch it.
You should read everything
that you produce. I even recommend that you read it aloud. You will
often find mistakes in this reading that you didn't catch when you
were reading. We develop vocabulary long before writing. This often
gives us the ability to say, "That doesn't sound right."
If
you don't know how to correct it, rewrite it and avoid the sticky
part. Just go at it from a different route.
Writing for the
internet is not like writing a formal paper for school or business
that requires the writer to be somewhat formal (stilted) in their
language. Internet writing is a definite application for the KISS
principle (Keep It Simple Stupid)
The pages that follow are
intended to provide you with some reference sheets that tell you
simple ways to improving your writing
skill.
