Are you familiar with keywords? In Squidoo they are called tags. These should be phrases that people might use to search for information concerning your topic. Mr. LewisSmile has a very informative piece called Tagging Tricks Lens that is worth your reading it. http://www.squidoo.com/tricks

The more specific you are, the more likely you are to attract buying visitors. The key thing in that statement is buying visitors. If you attract hordes of visitors and none are willing to buy, you have accomplished nothing.

Coming up with the best phrases to attract the search engines is an important skill that you must continually strive to improve.

Your profile is very important on Squidoo just like it is on all social networking sites. Be sure to include a photo. It can be an interesting picture or one that is related to what you are writing about on your lenses.

The information you give here should be encouraging people to visit some of your lenses.

You will need to give your lens a name. Make it appealing and still informative. It should make it very clear what the lens is about. It should also include a keyword – a term that people might use when they are searching for information about your subject.

Don’t forget that your title should be appealing. Don’t make it so “cute” that it loses all pretence of professionalism. You are trying to pique curiosity.

What is a lens or Squidoo for that matter? Squidoo has collected the tools and given us the opportunity to create a single, easy-to-make, free website. The lens is a place where you can talk about or promote things that mean a lot to you.

Want to give it a try? Click here: http://www.squidoo.com/wizard/start.

All kinds of helpful information is available at http://www.SquidU.com including a forum where you will find helpful people willing to answer your questions.

Explore all the lenses on your subject. You can learn lots by observing what the top movers and shakers are doing.

Content For Squidoo Is Prime Importance

The first module that you will create for Squidoo is the introduction. Since this is the first thing visitor will see, the importance can’t be overstated. You should try to do two things in the first sentence – state the purpose of the lens and give the primary keyword phrase. This sentence is often what is shown on the page of search results.

Good content is necessary in all of your modules. There are only two reasons people would read your lens – to get information or to be entertained. Be sure to use related search terms to lead the search engine is their quest to figure out what your page is about.

Your subject should be something you know about so that you can share that knowledge. Write with enthusiasm so that will become contagious to your reader. Be brief and to the point. If the module is too long, divide it into two different modules.

Break up your content. A long block of test is boring and will lose the interest of your reader. Vary the look with ads, images, icons, etc.

And, yes, grammar and spelling do matter. Check it before publishing.

Squidoo and the Black Box

Squidoo has a relatively new module called the Black Box. Essentially it is just what it says.

It is a black box with white lettering. The type is larger and allows you to add emphasis to a title or a quotation. Visit my lens at Squidoo to see how I used it.

While at the lens read the module that gives two books by Seth Godin and Megan Casey, co-founders of Squidoo.com. Both of these are definitely worth the download. Beware though, you are going to have fireworks going off in your brain with ideas for lenses.

I am finding the building of a lens to be easier than I anticipated. Read a bit and you will find the instructions for the different types of modules to be very clear.

Experiment. It doesn’t hurt to try. If you decide you don’t like it, you can always go back and edit it.

Let me know if you have a lens so I can go check it out. That is part of the social in “social networking”.

“Squidoo Basics” Begins

The book that I have chosen to follow for my “How To Use Squidoo” journey is listed to the right. You might want to follow along if you are a beginner at Squidoo also.

I mentioned that I had created 2 modules yesterday — a text module and a guestbook. The text module is just what it says. It gives you the space to include content. You will notice that I have also included a large image in this module. I decided to use this clip art to symbolize what I need to be — a busy bee at the computer. It could have also been a photo.

The guestbook is somewhat like the comments section on this blog. It gives visitors to the lens an opportunity to express their opinions. It is my hope that the experts out there, and there are many, will give suggestions for this ambitious climb up the knowledge mountain.

If you too are taking this journey with me, be sure to post here.

Follow My Squidoo Progress!

Today is the beginning of a new learning experience for me. I am starting a journey to learn how to use Squidoo effectively.

I will be trying something new each day and I will blog about it here. Your suggestions would be appreciated. I began today by reading the book “Squidoo Basics” which is available in the side bar. The first part of the book sufficiently convinced me that this was an internet tool that I must master. The reasons are many and powerful.

To start I signed up for an account, completed my profile, uploaded a picture and wrote two modules. A lens on Squidoo is made up of several modules. Updating the content will keep you lens in good shape.

I created the introduction module and used a piece of clipart with it to start the page. I created a guest book for visitors to leave a message.

Check back tomorrow to see what I am doing.
